Menopause

The word menopause was coined by French physician Dr Charles Negrier in 1821 . It takes roots from Greek words “ pausis “ which means pause & “ men “ meaning month. Thus it literally translates to “ end of monthly cycles “.

Onset of menopause is clinically confirmed after cessation of menstruation for more than a year . There are hormonal assays , like FSH/ LH , which lend objective confirmation.
However, to box menopause strictly to cessation of menstruation will be unfair; since the lack of hormones brings in changes; not just in reproductive systems but affect overall physical health including bones, heart and emotional- psychological health. It is associated with change in societal attitudes towards the women , as well.

Menopause is universal and known to happen in women all throughout human history. Then, why the sudden interest & spotlight now? What’s changed? The answer is in numbers. By 2025, there will be an estimated 1.1 billion women globally, expected to be entering perimenopause & post menopausal years. They’re typically in the prime of their lives; both in career and home front; with aging parents, children leaving home for their future & so forth. Add physical and emotional challenges that she has to deal with, due to natural processes & it’s a recipe for stress. Further, they’re reluctant/ uncomfortable to seek medical advice for their physical & psychological health issues; which makes it complicated.

In Indian context, add social taboos, psychological resistance to seek medical care & thus we have women who seek medical treatment only when they can’t bear the suffering anymore. So, many reproductive system cancers are diagnosed only in advanced stages.
All this makes menopause and perimenopause extremely important condition ,to address.
